Shri Jamini Roy (Bengali: যামিনী রায়; 11 April 1887 – 24 April 1972) was one of the most famous pupil of Abanindranath Tagore, whose contribution to the emergence of modern art in India remains unquestionable. Shri Jamini Roy is an Indian painter, honored with the State award of Padma Bhushan in 1955. Later in his career, several of his many paintings were based on the everyday life of rural Bengal. He continues to be one of the most respected artists in India to date. Jamini Roy did a suite of paintings featuring Santal women, sensuously painted in firm angular lines and hinted stylisation, engaged in their daily chores.
